Ivanka Trump kennen we natuurlijk allemaal als de First Lady favoriete dochter van Donald Trump, en misschien ook als zakenvrouw. Maar was we écht niet hadden verwacht is dat ze in de jaren negentig volledig opging in het grunge-gebeuren. Dit blijkt althans uit het nieuwe boek van haar moeder Ivana.
Ze omarmde de mode en cultuur van die tijd. Dat was uiteraard tegen het zere been van haar opvoeders.
"During my punk phase in the nineties, I was really into Nirvana. My wardrobe consisted of ripped corduroy jeans and flannel shirts. One day after school, I dyed my hair blue. Mum wasn't a fan of this decision. She took one look at me and immediately went out to the nearest drugstore to buy a $10 box of Nice'n Easy. That night, she forced me to dye my hair back to blonde. The colour she picked out was actually three shades lighter than my natural colour… and I have never looked back!"
We zullen helaas nooit te weten komen hoe Ivanka met blauw haar eruit ziet, maar er zijn wel momenten geweest in haar modellencarrière die in de buurt van de punk-look kwamen:
Klaarblijkelijk was de wortel van haar esthetische fase wijlen Kurt Cobain, die ze zich herinnert in een ontroerende passage:
"It wasn't too long after this that Kurt Cobain, the singer, songwriter, and guitarist for Nirvana, committed suicide. It was a shock and I was distraught. Mum had no idea who Kurt Cobain was, and she sympathised only so much. After twenty-four hours of my crying inconsolably in my room, alone—major melodrama—Mum had to pull me out of there to go down to dinner."
Hoe het ook zij, Ivanka's boekonthulling zorgde hier en daar voor de nodige opgetrokken wenkbrauwen:
