Wil jij ook best 'ns over die Route 66 sjezen, of gewoon dolgraag een rondje Amerika doen, maar heb je geen idee waar dan in vredesnaam te beginnen? Geen paniek! Hulp is hier. In de vorm van de fijnste plekken, festivals en andere te gekke to do's die The States een meer dan uitstekende roadtripbestemming maken.

The Black Hills van South Dakota

<p> Head to Keystone—the home of Mount Rushmore—and you can say hi to George, Abe, Teddy, and Thomas while taking in some pretty mind-blowing views. In fact, this year marks the 75<sup>th</sup> anniversary of completion! Travel 15 miles to Custer State Park, where you can peruse an art festival (September 29 – October 1) or even watch the annual Buffalo Roundup (September 30)(sure, why not), where cowboys and cowgirls round up and drive the herd of approximately 1,300 buffalo. No reservations are required, but definitely plan in advance—the event draws 14,000 visitors each year. Lastly, be sure to hit up the Wind Cave National Park, where you can get an intimate 4-hour tour and go spelunking through the dark tunnels and caves.</p>

Sjees vooral even langs Keystone en ga op de foto met het indrukwekkende Mount Rushmore National Memorial - ofwel de great faces van George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln en Theodore Roosevelt, ontworpen door kunstenaar Gutzon Borglum.

15 Kilometer verderop is een kunstfestival in Custer State Park (29 september t/m 1 oktober) en de jaarlijkse Buffalo Roundup (30 september) waar cowboys en -girls zo lang mogelijk op hun stier proberen te blijven zitten. Amerikaanser kan haast niet.

Wie nog tijd over heeft moet zeker even naar Wind Cave National Park, waar je samen met een gids urenlang ronddwaalt door de tunnels en grotten van het park.

Santa Fe, New Mexico

<p>Santa Fe temps are pretty much perfect in the fall, and a slew of festivals are on the horizon: the Santa Fe Wine and Chile Fiesta (September), Native Treasures Indian Arts Festival (September), the Santa Fe Film Festival (September), and the Albuquerque International Hot Balloon Fiesta (October). Add to your itinerary: a drive to the beautiful Aspen Vista trail, about 14 miles from downtown. </p>

Santa Fe is niet alleen een perfecte plek in september vanwege de aangename temperaturen, maar ook door het uitgebreide aanbod aan festivals: de Santa Fe Wine & Chile Fiesta (september), Native Treasures Indian Arts Festival (september), the Santa Fe Film Festival (september), en de Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta (oktober). Ook een aanrader: een ritje maken langs de Aspen Vista route - neem je picknickmand mee!

San Francisco, Californië

<p>While San Francisco summers can be gloomy (#truth), the fall is prime time for this city: sunshine and balmy temps. There's a Ghiradelli Chocolate Festival in September, while the Fringe Festival also hits at that time. The annual jazz festival runs from September through November, and with the off-peak season, lesser crowds = more room for you.</p>

Fan van stad, strand, festivals en chocolade? Dan moet je naar San Francisco. In september vind je hier het Ghirardelli Chocolate Festival maar ook het Fringe Festival. Daarna kun je zo door naar het jaarlijkse jazz fesival dat wordt gehouden van september tot november.

Yellowstone National Park

<p>After all the summer tourists have taken their photos, you can have a quieter experience basking in the beauty of Yellowstone. The only drawback? Some amenities may not be available—but don't let that stop you. After enjoying the park (camping anyone?), indulge a bit and head to Montana's 101-year-old Lone Mountain Ranch, only 18 miles away, where you can get the real vibe of a dude ranch—but, like, a fancier one. (Fans include Kourtney Kardashian and Shay Mitchell, so, yeah.) They offer National Park Tours, along with horseback riding, fly fishing, hiking, and more.</p>

Trek de wandelschoenen aan en bezoek het immense Yellowstone National Park. Hier tref je wolven, elanden, bizons, otters en beren tegen een achtergrond van besneeuwde bergtoppen.

Laat je na de wandeling verwennen in de Lone Mountain Ranch, een knappe ranch in de bossen van het park die van alle gemakken is voorzien (fans zijn Kourtney Kardashian en Shay Mitchell dus ook aan luxe geen gebrek). Vanuit hier kun je niet alleen een tocht maken met de jeep maar ook paardrijden en vissen.

Denver, Colorado

<p>Beer and pretty scenery. Shall we say more? Okay we will: Take a hike along the High Line Canal or hit the Cherry Creek Bike Trail, then make a date with many (and we mean many) of the city's beer events during the season. </p>

Fan van bier en magistrale vergezichten? Zoek niet langer en trek naar Denver. Wandel langs het High Line Canal of stap op de fiets en volg het Cherry Creek Bike Trail. Prik vervolgens een aantal data om de vele bierfestivals te bezoeken.

Portland, Maine

<p>Fall foliage is on full display in the fall in Maine, and Portland offers one of the best cities to see it. Head up to Bradbury Mountain State Park, just a 25-minute drive, to hike and enjoy the scenery. Stay in Portland for a myriad of fall festivals–including <a href="https://harvestontheharbor.com/events/" target="_blank">Harvest on the Harbor</a> in October and Portland Beer Week in November.</p>

Liefhebbers van stedentrips en natuur opgelet: mooier dan Portland krijg je 't niet (of in ieder geval nauwelijks). Hartje stad tref je een aantal hippe wijken, toffe fietsroutes en foodtrucs met overheerlijk voedsel. En op een half uurtje rijden ligt Bradbury Mountain State Park waar je urenlang kunt wandelen door beeldschone bossen.

Ook in Portland zijn trouwens genoeg festivals te vinden, zoals Harvest on the Harbor in oktober en Portland Beer Week in november.

Savannah, Georgia

Savannah is één van de oudste steden in de staat Georgia en in de zomer ook één van de warmste. Daarom is het herfstseizoen perfect om deze stad te verkennen, ook vanwege de vele muziek en filmfestivals. Het Mountain Film Festival bijvoorbeeld of het Savannah Film Festival.

Daarnaast is er ook wat wils voor de liefhebber van horror en griezelverhalen want deze stad staat bekend om zijn vele spookhuizen die je samen met een gids (rond middernacht) kunt bezoeken.

Louisville, Kentucky

<p>Louisville isn't just a great place to visit during the <a href="http://www.marieclaire.com/food-cocktails/g3697/kentucky-derby-drinks-cocktails-recipes/" target="_blank">Kentucky Derby</a>—it's a veritable treasure of cool architecture, a great local food scene, and (obviously) amazing whiskey/bourbon. (Fun fact: a third of the world's bourbon whiskey comes from this city.) September is a celebration of National Bourbon Heritage Month while October boasts an annual Jack -O'-Lantern Spectacular. </p>

Louisville is niet alleen een geweldige plek om te bezoeken tijdens de Kentucky Derby — een paardenrace op de eerste zaterdag in mei — maar ook voor de architectuur, de lokale food scene en uiteraard voor de whiskey/bourbon (één derde van alle bourbon whiskey komt uit deze stad). Ga je in september? Dan is het feestmaand, de National Bourbon Heritage wordt dan namelijk gevierd. Liever in oktober? Dan vindt het jaarlijkse Jack -O'-Lantern Spectacular plaats.
