De Australische Essena O'Neill doet nogal wat stof opwaaien sinds haar plotse maar vastberaden vertrek van all things social media. Zelfs NOS bericht erover. De populaire Instagrammer (ze had meer dan een half miljoen volgers) verklaart er klaar mee te zijn, omdat alles nep is. En dus verwijderde ze 2.000 Instagram-foto's, haar YouTube-kanaal en heeft ze haar contract bij een van de bekendste modellenbureaus van Australië opgezegd. Daarvoor in de plaats kwam website letsbegamechangers.com waarop de 19-jarige O'Neill pubertijdgenoten waarschuwt voor socialmediaverslavingen en voor een vertekend beeld van de werkelijkheid.
'I found myself drowning in the illusion. Social media isn't real. It's purely contrived mages and edited clips ranked against each other. It's a system based on social approval, likes and dislikes, validation in views, success in followers... it's perfectly orchestrated judgement. And it consumed me,' schrijft ze aldaar.
Op haar Instagram-account stond enkel nog een aantal foto's met herziene bijschriften als: 'Was paid $400 to post a dress. That's when I had maybe 150k followers, with half a million followers, I know of many online brands (with big budgets) that pay up to $2000 per post.' En: 'NOT REAL LIFE - took over 100 in similar poses trying to make my stomach look good. Would have hardly eaten all day.' Dat account is inmiddels opgeheven.
Zonder twijfel allemaal hartstikke goed van haar. En dapper. Maar! Hoe vertrokken is ze nou eigenlijk met die nieuwe website en in plaats van een YouTube-kanaal eentje van Vimeo? #durftevragen
Man Repeller schreef over O'Neills social-media-is-nep verklaring: 'No shit it's fake,' was my kind, thoughtful, initial reaction. But I'm jaded: I work in this world. The fourth wall has long been broken. When I see a model smiling with a coconut on the beach, I do not think, 'Goals'. I assume she's photoshopped then think, 'I bet that model hates coconut. Good for her, though. Make money. A job's a job.'
Zo is het maar net.
En ondanks de beslist terechte lofzang die O'Neill na haar vertrek enthousiast toegezongen kreeg, moet ook zij ruiterlijk toegeven dat een job een job is en geld geld. Tegen het einde van een 17 minuten tellend relaas op YouTube zegt ze: 'If you want to support me there is a support page, I can't afford rent right now. I am embarrassed to admit that I need help. I can't afford my own life.' Ze sluit het filmpje af met: 'I'm not a purist. I need money for rent and food. If you get anything from my videos or the site pay what it's worth to you on the support tab.'
Tijdelijk terug naar de ouders geen optie? Of een extra bijbaantje misschien? Game changen gaat nou eenmaal niet over rozen...
