Het zal je niet ontgaan zijn, maar ter dubbel check: het was gisteren International Women's Day. En Melania Trump wilde speciaal voor de gelegenheid ook wat vertellen aan de mensen. Ze gaf een speech in het Witte Huis voor, amongst others, de United Nations Women for Peace Association en Girl Scouts of America.
Ondanks de denigrerende opmerkingen en de vrouwonvriendelijke politieke beslissingen van haar man Donald Trump, sprak ze over de urgentie van gelijke rechten. Het is trouwens niet de eerste keer dat ze haar verleden als immigrant aanhaalde. Melania:
'Throughout history and around the globe, we have seen a common thread in the ongoing struggle for equal rights, personal achievement and the betterment of society through the collaboration of women who together believed in a brighter future for themselves and for their children.'
Ze vervolgt:
'As an immigrant myself, having grown up in a communist society, I know all too well the value and importance of freedom and equal opportunity — ideals which this great nation was founded on and has continued to strive toward throughout its history.'
Best bijzondere woorden van een first lady die, als ze indertijd onder Trumps nieuwe immigratieregels had geleefd, toch echt het land zou zijn uitgezet. Te weten dat ze in de jaren negentig als model werkte via een toeristenvisum - dat had nu dus niet meer gemogen.
Toch gelooft Melania dat Amerika nog een free and open land is:
'For so many of us fortunate enough, and by the grace of God, to live in free and open societies — gender equality is painful enough with the ongoing fight for equal pay, the need to challenge gender bias in all its forms, and the ongoing efforts to forge gender-balanced leadership.'
Ze vervolgt dat er nog veel werk te verzetten is:
'But, there remains far more brutal and terrifying incarnations of actual gender persecution which we must face together, such as forced enslavement, sexual abuse and absolute repression of far too many women and girls around the globe," she said. "We must remember these women in our daily prayers and use our combined resources to help free them from such unthinkable and inhumane circumstances.'
